For the compliance period ending January 31, 2024, here are the MCLE requirements for a licensed California attorney:
- 25 hours over 3 years
- 12.5 of those 25 hours must be participatory
- 4 hours must be for legal ethics
- 2 hours must be for elimination of bias; 1 of those 2 hours must be for implicit bias
- 1 hour must be for competence (substance abuse or mental health)
What Is A Participatory MCLE?
A participatory MCLE means a MCLE where your attendance is documented by a third party like the MCLE vendor. Compare that to a self-study MCLE, where you self-report your attendance.
What Are The New MCLE Requirements?
For the compliance period ending January 31, 2025, you need the above requirements plus the following:
- The 1 hour for competence must now be on prevention and detection; you need 1 more hour for competence and it must be on attorney wellness (so 2 total)
- 1 hour must be for technology
- 1 hour must be for civility

What Is Considered A MCLE?
A CLE (Continuing Legal Education) is an educational program intended to help attorneys stay current with new laws or expand their legal expertise.
Mandatory means it’s required by the State Bar.
